I’m sure many of you reading this are probably thinking “It’s just another IT trend, with yet another Buzz word” first we were all sick of hearing Cloud & now we are already sick of hearing ‘Big Data’ – but for me personally I believe this is different; it really is the hottest trend in IT! The more I read & hear about the impact it will (& it is!) having on business and society the more excited and passionate I get!
There are some amazing (& scary!) examples of where Big Data Analytic’s really is transforming our lives & this is why I’m so passionate – this is no longer just about IT, it really is impacting and changing our everyday lives! There are algorithms that can predict the likelihood of getting a disease or having a heart attack, or algorithms that predict whether you are likely to default on a mortgage payment and I’ve even seen a study where analytics have shown how likely someone is to commit a crime (now imagine that – getting arrested in advance…!) of course it enables prevention to be put in place though. This really is exciting – the world of big data is changing our every day lives and I can’t wait to see what else is coming next!!!
I’m reading a really interesting book at the moment – ‘Big Data, a revolution that will transform how we live, work & think’ if this is a topic of interest to you then I’d highly recommend a read. It starts by talking about swine flu – I think this is a fascinating example where the public health authorities needed to slow down the spread but first they needed to know where it is today, they tried to collate this info via surgeries but by the time the data was captured and shared it was already 1 or 2 weeks out of data. Whereas Google had been able to predict the spread just by looking at what people were searching for! It has some great examples but really opens your mind to why and how this trend is going to have a dramatic impact on business’s and why organizations need to act now. I think this is a great quote from Gartner that really highlights the need to act now
“By 2015, organizations integrating high-value, diverse, new information types and sources into a coherent information management infrastructure will outperform their industry peers financially by more than 20%.”
– Gartner, Regina Casonato et al., “Information Management in the 21st Century
I’m really excited to see where the industry goes over the next couple of years! In my opinion this is why working in the IT industry is so exciting; every technical discussion has a fascinating business requirement behind it! 🙂
